2015 New Year resolution (belated)

After several short trips to Korea, Japan, the US, and Spain within a few weeks, I finally came back in London, (caught a cold again), and successfully extended my visa to remain in the UK as a happy dependent :-p.

Now, belatedly, is the time to set new year's targets as every year. This year, again, I should stick to rather simple targets (rough allocation of time); this year is going to be a year of totally challenging new stuff:
  • Career: to success in seed financing for the startup (50%).
  • Private: to learn anew not to be bored; through studying Finance (MSc-level) and Economics (BSc-level) (20%), learning programming (20%) and absorbing various contents to write up a short fiction (10%).
Happy New Year 2015 monument, in a sort of traditional Japanese way with an orange.

Regrettably, last year I did not achieve much regarding my revised targets:
1. Keep exercise every week: Not really at all. After an accident in golfing, I stopped playing it.
2. Complete the Cambridge MBA with writing up the final dissertation on 'innovation and corporate governance': Done, but not fully satisfied with what I wrote up.
3. Confirm a place, likely in London, for researching management in the UK while working on the entrepreneurial project: The startup goes well so far (definitely this is the greatest achievement unexpectedly), yet failed to secure a research position.
4. Draft a story of science fiction. An idea of multi-worlds/minds structure is there, yet still too vague to start writing.
Anyway, my life to get busy living goes on.

34 countries visited so far, outnumbering my age at least

When counted, quite unexpectedly, 34 countries have been visited; moreover, I stayed at least one night (usually more) in 32 of them (two exceptions are Ukraina in Aug 2014 and Vatican in Sep 2014). 7 were added in the last summer's trans-Eurasia honeymoon trip. On the other hand, this year I have added Norway only, which was part of my MBA's Global Consulting Project, indeed.

I have never thought about such a travelling-the-world life before entering the university as an undergraduate (10+ years ago!!). However, south America, most of Africa, Middle East, and Central Asia are still missing. I should visit at least one new country each year so that the number can keep outnumbering my age.

A trip to Oslo, Norway for Cambridge MBA's Global Consulting Project (GCP)

I started working on an one-month consulting project with a client from Oslo, Norway. Of course I cannot disclose the details due to the non-disclosure agreement, but it is exciting because the scope of the project is a mixture of macro and micro economic perspectives with an aspiration to grow into a global economic cluster. To grasp the ecosystem and issues there, the team is invited to do around 20 interviews with various players in Oslo, which is a small but neat and modern city.

This is also a lucky opportunity for me because I've been wondering when I should go there and visit the Munch Museum, who is my second favorite now next to Van Gogh. Unfortunately, the museum has been closed until early April, yet we very much enjoyed some masterpieces in the National Museum, including the most famous 'Scream' painting. Yet, I preferred 'the Dance of Life' (below) to 'the Scream' for some reason which I cannot explain in a word.
The Life of Dance by E.Munch
Although having said that, we visited the location where Munch got his inspiration on 'the Scream'. It was really a beautiful scenery in the sunset and thus contrasted the screaming craziness inside the artist.
The place of his great inspiration (a few minutes from Bus station Brannfjellveien)
This was a very good exercise since it was on the way up to a hill of artistic park with funny modern arts presented. One example is this shape of love. There are a lot of sculptures on the streets of Oslo, which I would assume reflects their positive attitude to arts and/or affluent money from oil to make something for public.

We've blown off by the Windy City :-(

The team of Cambridge MBA, including myself, lost in the Kellogg biotech case competition. To be precise, actually this year it was about childhood pneumonia in Uganda, an urgent issue in public-health.

Anyway, the chilly winds (minus 15-20 Celsius Degree at night!!) of the Windy City just blew us off, miserably.

Christmas makerts in Frankfurt, Munich, Nurnberg

Munich /

I lock my door upon myself (1891)

Paul Gauguin. Te Tamari No Atua (Nativity).
Te tamari no atua (1896)

Wiesbaden /

Wiesbaden

When in Rome, do as the Romans do."

Mintz /

Stained glass by Chagall
