欧州MBA留学準備計画

MBA留学に向けた年間計画を考えました。

欧州中心になっている理由は、率直に言って、ヨーロッパの方がアメリカより国と街の雰囲気が好きなことと、後は年齢も考えてコースが概ね1年－1.5年と短いことが主な理由です。

【計画修正メモ】
2012年3月末にTOEFLについて長期化を想定して、計画修正しました。
2012年8月末に応募スケジュールを詳細化し、IELTSに転換しました。

Financial Times MBA ranking 2013

FTのMBAランキング最新版が公表されていました。個人的には、FTのランキングが一番バランスが取れているような気がしております。概ね知っている（≒知り合いが行っている）ところは25位あたりまでですが、逆に言うとその辺りの友人知人の選択とランキングの齟齬が少ないです。

このブログで取り上げた記憶のある単年MBAを中心とした欧州系6校（LBS, Cambridge, Oxford, IMD, INSEAD, IE）だけをピックアップすると、
4位：London Business School（3年平均だと3位）
6位：INSEAD（同5位）
11位：IE Business School（同9位）
16位：Cambridge（同23位）
19位：IMD（同15位）
24位：Oxford（同24位）
となっており、上記のヨーロッパトップ校の中では唯一Cambridgeが順位を伸ばしています♪

全くの余談ですが、The Economistの直近のランキングは、私が世界ビジネススクール情勢を知らない可能性も高いですが、こんなに違うか？と評価方法を疑問に思うくらい違います。まあ、ランキングなんてrating agencyのようなもので、それを信じて高い買い物をするとエラい目にあったりするわけで、マスの傾向値として参考程度に眺めておいて、あくまで最後はファカルティやクラスメイトとの相性も含めた自分のガッツフィーリングに頼るのが正道だと思っています。

Oxford応募延期（2nd: 1月⇒3rd: 3月）

Oxfordの応募を延期しました。

一つは、Cambridgeが今月末にはオファーが出そうな気配があるので、そちらを待ってからじっくり考える方がいいだろうということ（それ故やる気が出ないという問題もありますが、苦笑）。

もう一つには、最近行っている仕事の関係でEconomics/financeの分野における学問的な学びが多く、そちらを深めるような方向性で（すなわちこれまでのエッセイの応募動機とは変えて）応募してみた方が面白いかもしれない、という点からそれを練り直すための時間が欲しいということです。

そもそも、年末年始に遊び倒し、寝倒したのもいけないのですが。やる気になれない時に無理にエッセイ書いてもいい結果になる気がしないので。言い訳の言い訳。

Place on London Business School's MBA Programme

日本時間の午前1時前（締切日の現地16時）に、London Business SchoolよりMBAの合格通知（もちろん、追加の英語研修の条件付き）の連絡が来ました。なんにせよこれで一安心です。^^

火曜日の夜にいきなり電話かかってきて、英語レベルをチェックしたい（週末何しているか、Londonには来たことがあるかなどの雑談5分程度）、Pre-schoolで英語研修を受けるか、とか聞かれた時点で、たぶん受かるんだろうなとは思っていましたが、正式な連絡が来て一安心です。

勿論、これで気を抜くことなく、あともう少し頑張ろうと思います。

CJBS 2nd round interview invited!!

London Business Schoolに引き続き、Cambridge Judge Business Schoolからも無事にInterview Invitationが来てほっとしました。Webでは5週間ほど時間が掛かるように書かれていましたが、（2nd round提出が11/16だったので）2週間と半分で連絡がくるスピード感が嬉しいです（LBSは１ヶ月待ちました）。

ひょっとしたら、LBSも受けていると正直に書いたので、LBSのdecisionが来る（来週木曜日あたり）前に逃さないために先行しているのかもしれませんね。あくまで推測ですが。

せっかくなので、現地でのinterview（１月中旬）に参加して、実際の雰囲気を満喫して来ようと思いますので、会社でうまく有給が使えるように画策しなくては。

MBA place offerを維持するためのinitial commitment fee

もし来週にLBSから正式オファーが来たとして、その席を維持するために早期に支払う「コミットメントフィー」なるものががあるようです。が、残念ながら公式Webでは"If you are made an offer of a place on the programme, you pay an initial commitment fee to reserve your place in the class. This is normally due 3-4 weeks after you receive your offer letter, and is deducted from your total fees."とあるだけで実額が書いておりません。

仮にCambridgeの結果まで待つとすると、来年2月まで待たないといけないのでLBSのplaceはオプションを保持しておきたいところですので、実額を検索したところ（以下のサイトのコメントより）GBP1,500（約20万円弱）と比較的良心的なようです。これなら払っても納得できる（120円前半で買っておいたポンドの円安分と相殺してもお釣りが来る、笑）。

一方で、Cambrige MBAについては公式Webに明記があり、"a commitment fee of 10% of the course fee"でthe course feeがGBP38,000なので、GBP3,800（約50万円弱）と比べると割高ですね。さらに、Oxfordも当然に気になったので調べると、なんとこちらはGBP6,150（約80万円）ともっと高いことが公式Webで判明しました、さすが？Oxfordは強気ですね。Stage 1で先行して受けなくてよかったと、IELTSの結果がギリギリになったことに感謝です。笑

コミットメントフィーのことを全く考えずに、英語試験スコアと準備の立ち上がりを考慮して受ける順番を決めてここまで来てしまいましたが、結果的には比較的順当な順番だったようです。まあ、これでLBS落ちていたらまさに取らぬ狸の皮算用ですが。。。来週木曜日が待ち遠しいです。

Cambridge Judge Business SchoolのMBA degree programにも、締め切り前に無事応募書類を揃えてオンラインで提出しました。大学現地！でのインタビューの可否は、5週間後くらいに来るらしいので、クリスマス前くらいに朗報が来ることを期待して待っております。

ここまでは推薦者やらいろいろな人の力も借りてきましたが、ここから先は自分の力だけしか頼れないので、しっかり準備して臨もうと思います、とても楽しみです。

Process behind preparing Questions

LBS sends out a set of questions, divided into categories,to the interviewers.

The interviewer then picks the question from each category and based on your unique experience (mentioned in the resume), the interviewer adds appropriate questions for you.

Tip 1: Use "London Business School" instead of LBS when you are communicating with the officials

Tip 2: For the presentation, the AdCom wants to test your communication and persuasion skills. They also want to see how your process information and infer arguments. So select random topics and practice giving presentation on all aspects of the topic.

Tip 3: After you prepare the answers for the school specific questions, go through your resume. TOEFLをずっと勉強してきて、スコアが上がらないので急きょIELTSに切り替えたときに頼った一冊です。各セクションの試験内容、時間配分、練習問題と解説、さらに受験時のTips、そして最後に全体の模擬試験が一つが、この本に含まれている内容です。

Listening、Reading、Writing、Speakingといったモジュール構成はTOEFLとIELTSで変わらないのですが、問題形式は大きく異なっており、その差を理解してIELTS向けの勉強をするのに（Listeningでは人名・地名や数値の聞き取り、ReadingではTrue/False/Not givenの判断問題、Writingではparaphraseを多用した図表の解説分作成、Speakingの1分間準備して1.5-2分間しゃべるショートスピーチ、等）大変役に立ちました。また、掲載されている問題のレベル感も適切で実際の本試験に近いものになっており、WritingやSpeakingの解答もおそらくband score 9の完全に近いものが掲載されており、解答の仕方を覚えるだけでも有用でした。

あえてマイナスを付けるとすると、Reading/Listeningで使われているVocabularyはやや簡単なので、もう少し鍛える必要がありますが、それは例えば初級者～中級者には、Cambridge Vocabulary for IELTS with Answers and Audio CD (Cambridge Exams Publishing)が、上級者にはCambridge Vocabulary for IELTS Advanced with Answers and Audio CDあたりが補完する書籍としてお薦めです。

IELTS専門の単語集というのは（2012年秋時点）日本ではまだなく、TOEFL iBTのものを使っていてもそれでは専門用語が若干マニアック過ぎて、よりparaphraseが要求される、すなわち英語で英語を理解していく、IELTSのスタイルに適したものがなく、ダメ元で購入したこれが最適でした。

一つは、IELTSを作っている大元のCambridgeが出しているものであるため、レベル感が適切であるということがポイントです。

もう一つ、Unitが25個（3-4pages）なので、例えば1日1つやっても1時間かからない程度で一ヶ月でIELTS用ののVocabularyをカバーすることができます。加えて、Reading/Listening/Writing/Speakingの模擬的な問題形式になっているので、それもまた本試験には役に立ちます。

なお、当たり前ですが英語の本なので全て英語で書かれており、、IELTS WritingとSpeakingで特に求められるこの表現はこう言い換え（paraphrase）もできるということをたくさん学ぶ観点からもよくできていると思います。

難点を言えば、他の方も書かれているように、文字が小さめで解答欄も書ききれないことがあることと、後は本が他の洋書同様に大きめのサイズ何で持ち運びで若干邪魔なときがあるということでしょうか。あと、ReadingやWritingで偶に出てくる難解なVocabularyまでカバーできていないので、それにはCambridge Vocabulary for IELTS Advanced with Answers and Audio CDに進む必要があると思いますが、それらを差し引いても十分な良書だと思います。

IELTS二回目結果（Overall/OA:7.5）

なんと、前回から結構下がっていました。Readingはできた気がしたので上がりましたが、やはりSpeakingとWritingは慢心せず、一回目だけ神が降りていたと思っておきます。

それでもOA7.5ですが、Writingは結構しっかり書けた（むしろ字数をだいぶオーバーしたので書き過ぎてエラーが増えたのかも）自信があったのに6.5とミニマム7.0の基準に引っかかってしまい、Speakingも一回目よりしっかりしゃべれた気がしたのに7.0になってしまいました。まあここら辺が、実際の実力なのかもしれませんが、なにはともあれ、一回目の結果ですべて願書は出そうと思います。

締め切り（10/4 17:00 GMT = 10/5 1:00 GST）前に無事、LBS 1st round applicationを提出しました。

エッセイ質問数が6問、計1750文字（additionalも書いたので）にさらに学業成績の言い訳やら今昔のjob responsibilitiesやら結構大変でしたが、自分の将来を客観的に考え直し、タイミング的にCMR（分子遺伝学的完全寛解）達成後でもあったので、改めてどうやって生きていくかを考えるいい機会でした。

この勢いで、あと二つ、CambridgeとOxfordも今月中にある程度の目途を付けたいと思います。

英語学習法#3 Weblio & Vocabulary.com

Weblioというオンライン辞書の単語帳サービスを使用していますが、これは便利ですね。

特に、よくできていると思うのは以下の点です。

• Google Chrome extensionをインストールすることで、ニュース等で分からない単語をマウスを当てるだけで和訳を調べることができ、必要に応じてマイ単語帳に登録でき、そのマイ単語帳を複数デバイスで共有できる
•  マイ単語帳では最大15フォルダ、2000単語まで登録でき、複数フォルダを作って管理がしやすい（今のところ、今覚えようとしている単語、覚えた単語、難しすぎてとりあえず放置する単語の、3カテゴリに分けて管理しています）
• 単語ごとに詳細にレベルも設定されているので（アルクと比べても多くの単語がきちんとレベル付けされています）一過性の単語と無視すべきか覚えるべきかの判断し易い
• 一分程度で終わる語彙力診断が適度なレベルで頭の体操にちょうどよい（だいたい自分は、7千語前後～1万語あたりの語彙力と診断されています）

もう一個、全部英語のサービスとしてはVocabulary.comも秀逸です。

ただ、こちらの英単語はnativeようなのか相当レベルが高いと思います。近い単語を選ぶ際に、問われている単語のみならず、回答欄に出てくる4択全て分からないこともたまにあります。こちらは、50/50や使用例などのヒントもあって、クイズ形式でしかも10問単位で完結するので、さくさく勉強できて楽しいです。

Oxford MBA information session in Tokyoに参加して参りました。最後のTea Receptionまで参加してよかったです、参加前より志望度は上がりました。

Tomo Suzukiという日本人のProfessor of Accounting at Oxford Universityの方による、模擬レクチャー（Accounting; Should Japan adopt IFRS?）が、簡潔ながらも非常に面白い内容でした。

しかし、圧倒的多数がIFRS導入に賛成に手を上げていたのをみて、やはり近い領域で働いている人でないと内容に興味とか普段から持たないんだなと感じました。

閑話休題。

Oxford Said Business Schoolの印象としてはこれまでWeb等で集めていた情報よりも、よりpublic-mindないしmacroな視点、そしてWhat you really want to do you in your life?が強調されているようで、なんとなくですがMcKinsey&Companyや今の会社に近い雰囲気を感じました。

あとCambridgeとの違いはクラスサイズ、街の大きさ、等でカルチャー的なものは校風よりも個々人の違いが大きいとおっしゃっていたのも印象的でした。両方出してみて、両方受かったら最終的には人とのフィットを見て決めることになりそうです。是曰く、捕らぬ狸の皮算用。

残念なのは、ここでも1+1については詳しい説明はなく・・・やはり、とりあえずバックグラウンドからして入りやすそうなMBAで行ってみて、面白いテーマ・教授があったら延長というフレキシブルな計画が妥当な気がします。

IELTS目標設定（Overall/OA:7.5）

IELTSでOverall 7.5って、なんだかんだ日本人のトップ5%くらいなんですよね。片側5%なので、正規分布を仮定した時には偏差値70弱程度なので、まあいかんせん目指している大学がOxford、Cambridgeなので、それくらい頑張りましょう。
