It was a very good Christmas market indeed, even comparable to those in Germany. Yet I have to admit that food in Germany Christmas market was much better than here, to be honest. :-p

Stonehengeを見に行きましたが、まさにmiddle of nowhereに石がでーんと立っていました。見もふたもない言い方ですが。

なんかあまりに周りに何もないので、神秘性とか感じなかったのは日本的な森林文化的アミニズムに慣れてしまっていたからですかね。それとも単に、最短でも10メートルくらいまでしか近づくことしか許されていなかったからでしょうか。あるいはあるいは、非常に風が強く寒くて外に30分しかいれなかったせいでしょうか。

まあ、結論から言うと(HeathrowからバスでWoking stationまで45分、電車でSolsburyまで1時間、駅から現地までタクシーで20分という時間＋待ち時間）×2だけの価値はあったかと・・・たぶん。

Our Daily Bread / The Phantom of the Opera in London

イギリス・ニューカッスルでのプロジェクトがどうにか終わり、帰りの週末を利用してロンドンをぶらついてきました。一番のお目当てはThe Phantom of the Operaでした。

日本で劇団四季のものを日本で観て正直いまいちだったので「いつかは本場のものを」と思っていたのですが思ったより早く機会が来ました。当日に最後の1枚のチケットを確保し、Institute of Contemporary Artで時間をつぶす目的で観たドキュメンタリーOur Daily Breadが大当たりだったという幸運を経て、Her Majesty's Theatreへ。

Our Daily Breadは、日本語だと「いのちの食べかた」というちょっと情緒的なタイトルがついているようですが、中身は、90分間淡々と我々が食する野菜、牛乳、食肉がまさに「生産」されるプロセスをあえて断片的に提示する、BGM・モノローグ一切なしのドキュメンタリー映画です。これはこれで、どこか思考を遮断して生活していることを浮き彫りにさせてくれたいい映画でした。そこから派生して、人間を想像（同情）する力と、人間を想像（類推）してしまう力という表裏の問題をちょっと考えましたが、それはまたいつか。

さて、The Phantom of the Operaですが、大まかに2004年の映画版を観たことがあったのですが、後半については思い出せず、劇団四季の記憶もうろ覚えだったお陰でとても楽しめました。映画DVDを衝動買いして観たところ、エンディングはだいぶ違うようですね。舞台の終わり方は余韻が残る感じが非常に素敵でした。

劇場自体も1897年設立の歴史がある劇場で、趣があり素敵でした。あいにく座席が一番後ろだったので、Phantom, Christine, Raoulのカルテットの場面で3人を観ることができなかったり、細かい表情が見えずオペラグラスを使って見たりと残念な点もあったので、次はいい席を取ってまた観に来たいですね。

おまけ１：イギリスのHouse of Commons & Big Benをテムズ川越しに。議会政治の原点ですかね。明治憲法がイギリス立憲政治ではなくプロイセン憲法を参考にしたのには、歴史の必然があるのでしょうか。

 おまけ２：見かけた日本映画のポスター。いろんな意味で間違っているかと。まあ極端なものが取り上げられて翻訳されさらにずれるのは「異文化交流・文化紹介」の本質でもあるのでしょうが。
